AKC Golden Retriever Breeders

AKC golden retriever breeders pursue AKC standards that maintain the smart, clever, friendly features of the golden retriever.

The breed's popularity has made it a much sought-after dog to use in such areas as a guide dog, hunting, search and rescue operations, and a pet.

Dog breeders are interested in providing puppies that will grow and meet AKC standards. By producing beautifully formed, ambitious pups, the sterling view of the breed is perpetuated.

Whether displayed at shows, or walking in the park to get its much-needed exercise, people unfamiliar with the breed will have an opportunity to observe a spectacular animal in action.

The standard for judging any animal is complex. Some of the most important standard factors looked for by AKC breeders and judges follow.

The standard requires a male golden retriever's height to be 23 to 24 inches at the withers, with weight between 65 to 75 pounds.

The female golden retriever's height should be 21.5 to 22.5 inches at the withers, with weight between 55 to 65 pounds.

A symmetrical, powerful dog attracts interest, and is achieved when the dog is active. The golden retriever's and eager nature enable them to be trained for physically challenging jobs.

What kind of coat are AKC golden retriever breeders looking for? There should be quite a bit of gold shades in the coat. White or gray should range from minimal to none.

Light shades of gold should not be so light they appear to be white.

Dark shades should not be in a quantity to lead one to think the dog is just one dark shade. Faults can affect the golden retriever's compliance with AKC standards.

The AKC golden retriever breeders hope to never see spots of black coloring. Those are considered a fault.

Golden retrievers have a water-repellent coat. Seasonal change causes them to shed, so they do need to be brushed regularly.

Some dogs bear intelligent expressions. The face is important in AKC standards and to the AKC golden retriever breeders. When in profile, the muzzle should be straight.

Friendly eyes, preferably dark brown and set well apart, produce the intelligent look.

Falling close to the cheek, the tip of the ear should just cover the eye if pulled forward. Look for a black or brownish black nose to complete the overall handsome or beautiful face of the golden.

The body is strong, and it is evidenced first by the well-developed chest and next by the straight backline.

Standards dictate that the tail be muscular at the base. Foot size is subject to AKC standards, as well.

They should be medium size with thick pads. The desired gait is a well-coordinated, smooth, powerful motion when trotting.

The need for American Kennel Club breeders to be aware of and strive for the standards is because AKC does not allow breeding restrictions.

When a dog is registered with AKC, the requirement is that both parents are recognized as a specific breed with AKC.

A purebred dog is eligible if its litter has been registered, or the pedigree for 3 generations can be provided. A registered dog may not qualify for show.

Reputable AKC golden retriever breeders can advise prospective buyers of that possibility.
