Training a Golden Retriever

The Golden retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the world and because of they are highly intelligent dogs, training a Golden Retriever is relatively easy.

Some dog breeds, such as basset hounds, take one to two years to train while golden retrievers learn very quickly, sometimes less than one year.

Golden retrievers are excellent hunting dogs, since they are retrievers, which is why you see them in many hunting pictures and paintings in stores.

Golden retrievers, like all other dog breeds, need repetition when they are being trained by their breeder or owner so do not give up early in the process.

The process of training a golden retriever should not begin as soon as you purchase the dog and bring it home.

The reason for this is that you want the dog to become accustomed to their new surroundings first. This will make it easier for the dog to pick up on the training commands, knowing they are comfortable in their new home.

Wait roughly two to three weeks before beginning a formal Golden Retriever training with your new dog.

Before beginning the routine make sure you purchase treats that you can give your dog when he or she follows a command correctly.

This helps the dog learn the commands, learn what they are supposed to do, and lets them know that if they perform a command correctly they will be rewarded, which further speeds up the process.

When you decide to train a golden retriever, set aside 15 minutes per day to do so. You do not want to overwhelm the dog with a ton of commands all at once.

Get rid of all other distractions in the room when performing a training session such as the dog's toys, the food, their bed and any other dogs in the house.

Make sure they can give you their undivided attention, which will be difficult even if the room is empty. The first command a golden retriever should learn is to sit.

While saying the command, push down on the dog's buttocks to get him or her to sit on the floor. As soon as the dog sits on the floor, give him or her a treat.

Once the dog masters the first command, you can move onto a new one. The second command should be come.

This is an important command to train a Golden Retriever in case they get out of the house without a leash and the yard is not fenced in or does not have an electric fence to keep the dog from getting into the street.

Other commands constituting golden retriever training include the following:

* Down

* Off

* Heel

* No

* Stay

* Fetch

When it comes to potty training a golden retriever, walk the dog outdoors after every meal, after every bowl of water, and every 20 minutes around the clock so they learn to do their business outside the house and not on your floor.

Should the dog go to the bathroom inside the house, stick their nose in the mess and forcefully say no to the dog.
